Politics in this era is so much about appearances and red herrings, and so little about common sense. Two stories that have significant buzz today are as follow:
- Romney tour bus honks while driving past people waiting to enter an Obama event.
- Obama walked out on a tab at a restaurant.
With all the issues that confront our country and what is at stake, my questions is “what does this have to do with anything?”Let’s take a look at the Romney bus incident for starters. Depending on the side of the aisle, the reactions have been “look how classless Romney is for doing this” or “look how awesome Romney is for doing this.” Why on earth would anyone think that Romney had anything to do with this? Was he driving the bus? Was he in the bus?
A quick search revealed that Romney was gave a speech about an hour after this event in Cincinnati, OH. The incident itself occurred in Cleveland, OH, which is approximately 250 miles away. Unless Romney has a teleportation device, it would appear that he wasn’t in there. Whoever was driving the bus was likely some volunteer who was asked to drive the bus to the next place it would be needed. But I’m sure that they stopped to call Romney and interrupt his speech prep time to ask if he wanted them to honk the horn… Bottom line is that this event has no bearing on anything.
Now to address the Obama restaurant bill issue. Did anyone actually expect the President of the United States to pull out his wallet and wait at the cash register? Of course not, he has people to do that. Someone on his staff forgot to get the check. Likely, they all had other things on their mind, and everyone thought someone else was taking care of it. Heck, I’ve almost accidentally walked out on a tab before and I’m in a much less complicated situation. If he had yelled “suck on that, chumps!” as he walked out it would have been a legitimate story, but instead they settled up later in the day.
Again, these are both just cases of people reading into events what they want to see. The ubiquity of detailed information on politician’s every step gives us so much fodder, that anyone can be read as some degenerate. Try to use some common sense, people.
